Talk description
Historically, nuclear sites were not designed with decommissioning in mind due to a lack of understanding of long-term environmental risks and the focus on generating secure nuclear energy post-war. As our understanding evolved, newer sites were built with better appreciation of both radiological and non-radiological hazards. This shift means that achieving the NDA’s mission to clean up legacy nuclear sites presents a wide range of site-specific challenges.
Each site should have a ‘site end state’ strategy, detailing the final state of the site and the path to get there. New regulations place the onus on sites to demonstrate an optimised and risk-informed end state strategy, and regulators assess these strategies on a case-by-case basis. This introduces a degree of regulatory uncertainty, so how can we satisfy regulators and ensure the site can be released from radioactive substances regulations for use by future generations?
Speaker
Tom Blaser is a nuclear industry professional with seven years of experience, specialising in radioactive waste management and decommissioning. He began his career as an engineer at Cavendish Nuclear, supporting decommissioning projects at Sellafield and Devonport. With a background in engineering, Tom has developed a strong technical foundation that underpins his current role as a radioactive waste consultant at NSG.
